Doctor! Doctor!

It was as predictable as a Ryan Howard strikeout. Before the ink was even dry on my Aug. 22 column on gun control -- which was a desperate plea to keep our children safe from "tragic accidents" inside the home -- the gun nuts came out of their caves to give me grief.

While I'd love to answer each insane response with a dose of sanity, I can -- and will -- cut to the chase.

Watch "Bowling For Columbine" twice and call me in the morning ...

You haven't yet learned that Michael Moore rigs his movies? Pathetic. Some things never change.

Imam Feisal Rauf also recommends watching "Fahrenheit 9/11."

Dude, get over Michael Moore. He's a muckraking propagandist, not a serious documentarian. You must come up with a better argument on your own for invading people's homes and stripping them of rights guaranteed by the constitution, just because of one "tragic accident." Nobody should be subjected to a sentence of watching any Michael Moore production once, let alone twice.

In any given year, more children die in car accidents and drownings than die of careless firearm storage in the home. Would you have us give up our cars and swimming pools, too, to avoid more tragic deaths?

Lisa,

Your diatribe is predictable, especially the NRA-sponsored part about the car accidents. Not exactly apples to apple, but who ever said that mattered?
Your friends at Fox aren't muckracking propagandists?
Invading people's homes and stripping them of rights guaranteed by the constitution.
Oh yeah, I forgot this was going to be Obama's first official act in office.
Maybe 1,001st because it still hasn't happened.
Just stop already, will ya?
Come join us on the side of logic and reason. We're waiting for you.

Maybe Michael Moore "rigs" his movies, but even if they are half true, you have to wonder, don't ya?

What documentarian doesn't have an pre-conceived agenda heading into a project? They have their spin spun before the first shout of lights, camera, action.
And don't give me Ken Burns. He belongs on the Lifetime Channel. Blame on the ills of the world on white males.

Lisa, maybe you would change your tune and not be so coldly dismissive if a "tragic accident" hit a little closer to home -- where the heart is.
Then again, do you have a heart?

That's not nice. Lisa has a heart. Just a cold one.
BTW, Lisa, have you even seen "Fahrenheit 9/11"?
I doubt it. Back when you and Gordon used to do battle on that television show, I heard you say as much.
Maybe Rauf is more open-minded than you are.

OK, people, let's get past all the unproductive name-calling.
Michael Moore, Lisa Mossie, Gordon Glantz, Ken Burns --- they are who they are, agree or not.
At issue here is "Bowling For Columbine." It is generally regarded as Moore's best, most on-point, film.
There are facts, like about guns -- or the lack of them -- in other countries, that are hard to refute.

The problem is ownership of guns, it's responsible ownership. There is no way to police it, at least the way it is now, so we have these incidents like the one with the boy in Royersford.
The clear solution is some sort of middle ground. Perhaps there should be more restrictions about gun ownership in homes with X number of children under a certain in a household. It wouldn't end the risk -- some people drive without a license or car seats for their kids -- but it would help. Any life saved is a victory.
While the right to own a gun is guaranteed in the constitution, the times change and we have to change with them. While I support the second amendment, I don't support the single-minded folks at the NRA who stand in the way of reaching any meaningful middle ground.

I meant to say, the problem is NOT ownership of guns.
If I keep up with the typos, I'll be able to get a job with the Times Herald.

If I ear that bumper sticker phrase one more time I might kill somebody.
And I ain't gonna need no gun to do it.
