You've Got To Hide Your Love Away

I know this country's history of religious tolerance -- despite some rough patches along the way -- is a right source of pride.

But we need to think with our heads, not our hearts, on this lingering wedge issue of the MCC (Muslim Community Center) at a site close enough to Ground Zero (sorry, AP, but I'm capitalizing it out of respect ... my blog, my rules) that it was severely damaged on 9/11.

While we must keep in mind that all Muslim are not terrorists, all of the terrorists -- at least the ones who paint a target on our backs -- are Muslims.

I'm really, really shocked by you Gordon! Maybe you really don't believe this paranoia and you're just testing us. Otherwise I can't believe your stance on this. Very upsetting.

Well the ones who paint targets on our back, they aren't 'true' Muslims, they are Muslim extremists.

NEW YORK — In the latest in a spate of anti-Muslim incidents over the last two days, an intoxicated man entered a mosque in Queens on Wednesday evening and proceeded to urinate on prayer rugs, New York police officials said.

The man, identified as Omar Rivera, reportedly shouted anti-Muslim epithets and called worshippers who had gathered for evening prayer “terrorists.” One witness told the New York Post the man was “very clearly intoxicated” and had a beer bottle in his hand at the time.

“He stuck up his middle finger and cursed at everyone,” Mustapha Sadouki, who was at the mosque at the time, said. “He calls us terrorists, yet he comes into our mosque and terrorizes other people.”

Rivera has been charged with criminal trespassing.

FBI Special Agent Richard Kolko told msnbc.com that New York City has not seen a change in the number of hate crimes reported by Muslims so far this year.

But recent incidents — including the stabbing of a Muslim cab driver and the desecration of a California mosque — have some members of the Muslim community worried that crimes against Muslims could reach crisis levels.

"Without a significant response by mainstream political leaders, this disturbing trend will only continue to grow," said Faiza Ali, a New York spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Operating out of the Israeli Arab town of Abu Ghosh, a team of Israeli Arab chefs has recaptured the Guinness Book of Records title for the world's biggest serving of hummus. Indeed, the Israeli team not only exceeded the mark set only three months ago by a Lebanese group; they smashed it like a hummus chickpea, more than doubling the previous record with a precisely measured total of 4,090 kilograms of the tasty paste.

Reports the Jerusalem Post, "Hundreds of jubilant Israelis, a mix of Arabs and Jews, gathered around the giant dish in the village of Abu Ghosh, many of them dancing as a singer performed an Arabic love song to the beige chickpea paste."

The driving force behind the Israeli record-breaking team, Israeli Arab restauranteur Jawdat Ibrahim, remarked, "Today we have the hummus. Hopefully, we will have the talks for peace in our region." The Kosher Hedgehog thinks that Mr. Ibrahim may be on to something. Secretary of State Clinton, perhaps the key to re-starting Israeli-Palestinian negotiations is an invitation to Bibi Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas to a table laden with hummus, tahina, pita and shwarma.

New Orlean Time-Picayune, July 16, 2010, "Federal hate crime charges filed in Katrina shooting of African-Americans":

quote:
A former New Orleans resident was charged Thursday with federal hate crimes for his alleged role in a racially motivated shooting of three black men in the days after Hurricane Katrina.

Roland J. Bourgeois Jr., 47, is accused of plotting to defend his Algiers Point neighborhood "from outsiders" including African-Americans, constructing barricades on public streets and using racial epithets to describe black people, according to the five-count indictment.

At one point, Bourgeois allegedly said, "Anything coming up this street darker than a paper bag is getting shot."

The indictment charges Bourgeois with doing just that when three black males walked through the neighborhood toward a makeshift Coast Guard evacuation center on Sept. 1. Bourgeois fired a shotgun at the trio, felling Donnell Herrington and wounding Herrington's two companions near the corner of Pelican Avenue and Vallette Street, according to the indictment.

Later, Bourgeois plucked Herrington's bloodied baseball cap from the ground and proudly displayed it to others, boasting that he "got one" and had shot a "looter," according to a witness...

The indictment, filed Thursday, charges Bourgeois with conspiracy to commit a hate crime, committing a hate crime with a deadly weapon and with intent to kill, making false statements and obstruction of justice. He faces a possible sentence of life in prison if convicted.

The Herrington shooting was the subject of a lengthy Justice Department investigation into claims that white residents of Algiers Point attacked African-Americans in a spate of racially motivated violence in the wake of Katrina. Algiers Point did not flood, though it did sustain wind and storm damage.

The hurricane prompted more than a dozen residents in the neighborhood, most of whom are white, to take up arms, barricade streets with downed trees and debris, and coordinate vigilante patrols of the area...

One witness, Terri Benjamin, recalled hearing gunfire and seeing Bourgeois among a group of armed white men. Bourgeois was gripping a shotgun and celebrating.

"My neighbor was jumping up and down, hooting and hollering like he was big-game hunting and he got the big one," she said earlier this year. "All of his friends were rallying him on, and they were cheering."

Another armed man approached soon afterward and told the group that the wounded man was still alive a few blocks away.

According to Benjamin, Bourgeois said, "I'm gonna kill that ******,'" and ran, barefoot and shirtless, down the street before turning and jogging out of view.

Benjamin then heard another gunshot. And Bourgeois ran back to the group with a bloody baseball cap.

"And he brandished the cap for all of his friends," Benjamin recalled. "Everybody cheered. They were happy for him."

Herrington and his companions have said they were trying to get to an evacuation center set up at the ferry terminal in Algiers Point.

Herrington, who lives in Algiers, said his group was walking when a white man pointed his shotgun and, without saying a word, fired.

Shotgun pellets peppered his throat, torso and arms. He recalls scrambling to his feet and running. Herrington also remembers two more armed men joining the first gunman. As he ran, a second shotgun blast tore through his back.

Herrington eventually found his way to the home of an African-American couple who drove him to West Jefferson Medical Center, where he underwent emergency surgery to repair his internal jugular, which was shredded by buckshot.

His companions, cousin Marcel Alexander and friend Chris Collins, suffered minor gunshot wounds. Alexander said he and Collins were briefly taken hostage by a group of about five armed white men, one of whom threatened to set them on fire. Eventually the group allowed Alexander and Collins to flee.

Bourgeois is the only person charged to date in the shooting incident.

Let's not forget the white terrorists in New Orleans during Katrina, while Brownie was doing a great job.

Also, Texas, and other states, including this one.
