The Night Chicago Died

I know my immediate thoughts about the scandal surrounding Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich allegedly trying to auction off the U.S. Senate seat of President-elect Barack Obama was to question the long-standing practice of shooting dirty pool in Chicago -- and Illinois -- politics.

And to make a quick connection to Obama, who has risen out of -- and above -- this world.

But I place this one squarely on the shoulders of the voters who put this clearly derranged governor in office in the first place.

Look at the guy? To say he looks like a used salesman would be a disservice to used car salesmen. He looks like a used car salesman who can't stay employed because he can't sell a car.

We don't always have to listen to our mothers. Sometimes we can judge a book by its cover.

Somehow, these sleaze balls -- i.e. Newt Gingrich -- get elected and re-elected.

And is anyone surprised that the name of Jesse Jackson Jr. has surfaced in this scandal. The son of the foot-in-mouth, pseudo-preacher-for-hire was one of the leading candidates to replace Obama in the senate on his own merit. He can kiss that goodbye.

But the worst part was watching Sean Hannity and Karl Rove yuck it up on Fox the night news of the scandal broke.

Are they serious?

Must be fun to have no conscious, let alone a sense of how hypocritical you appear.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but shouldn't Rove already be in jail keeping the cell warm for Blago?

So is this how it's going to be, Gordo? You defending Obama no matter what he does the next 4-8 years? Let us know now so we can read someone really has a "soul of an independent" and not someone who just says it.

This just in (Gotta love those Jacksons!):

Report: Jackson backers sought cash for Ill. gov.

CHICAGO – Businessmen with ties to both Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson discussed raising $1 million for Blagojevich to help persuade him to appoint Jackson to President-elect Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat, according to a published report.

Citing unnamed sources, the Chicago Tribune reports in a story for Friday's editions that businessman Raghuveer Nayak and Blagojevich aide Rajinder Bedi told attendees at an Oct. 31 meeting that they needed to raise the money for the governor to ensure Jackson's appointment.

"Raghu said he needed to raise a million for Rod to make sure Jesse got the seat," an unidentified source who attended the meeting told the Tribune. Blagojevich also attended the meeting, which was sponsored by Nayak, an Oak Brook businessman.

A message left at a listing for Raghuveer Nayak in Oak Brook was not immediately returned early Friday. No published listing for Bedi could be found.

Blagojevich was arrested Tuesday on federal corruption charges that allege, among other things, a brazen scheme to put Obama's vacant Senate seat up for sale.

According to the FBI complaint, the Oct. 31 meeting took place the same day federal prosecutors intercepted a conversation in which Blagojevich claims he'd been approached by a representative for an unnamed "Senate Candidate 5" who offered cash in exchange for the Senate seat.

On Wednesday, it was revealed that Jackson was the candidate.

"We were approached 'pay to play,'" Blagojevich said in the call. The candidate would raise $500,000 for Blagojevich, and an emissary would raise an additional $1 million, according to the conversation.

Jackson spokesman Rick Bryant told the Tribune that while Jackson discussed the Senate seat with Nayak, he never asked him to do anything.

Nayak, 54, has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Blagojevich and is also close to the Jackson family. Bedi has also been a Blagojevich fundraiser.

The Oct. 31 meeting led to a Blagojevich fundraiser held Saturday that was co-sponsored by Nayak. The governor attended, as did Jackson's brother Jonathan, who went into business with Nayak several years ago, according to the newspaper report.

Two days later, Jackson met with Blagojevich to discuss the Senate seat.

Michael --

How did Obama get into the mix here? There's no defending Obama, because this has nothing whatsoever to do with Obama (no matter what you may hear out of Rush, Sean, Bill-o and the rest of the chattering wingers who still haven't gotten the message that their days are numbered).

Meanwhile, Republican Senators have just told all of us that we can drop dead for all they care, they are happy to make sure that American automakers -- along with American workers, American jobs and, ultimately, the American economy -- go down the drain.

See you in the breadlines, buddy. Make sure you bring a radio so you can listen to Rush tell you how great things are...

MPD,
Who are you, Gordon's press agent? He always seemed like the type who didn't need the help of the likes of you, but he is turning out to be a lot different than he seemed. Rah-Rah for Obama because he is a Democrat. Turns out Gordon was merely bitter that a Republican was the president. He ran no deeper than that! This country needs free thinkers. We just lost one. Go ahead and defend Gordon as he defends Obama, who is going to be a colossal failure.

Hey Michael,

Little bitter there about having a new president.

How's this:
First take a deep breath (don't want you to injure yourself.)

Say this slowly 5 times:
President
...
Barack
...
Hussein
...
Obama

Wait ten minutes and repeat.

It's not going to hurt.
You have until the middle of next month to get this down.

He is your President, unless you wish to renounce your citizenship.

It is YOUR job as a citizen of this country to help this guy make the country a better place.

Calling him a collassal failure before he even takes the oath of office shows that you are the bitter one who can't stand the idea that Obama is now running the show.

Wouldn't it be ironic if it turns out that the Obama people were the ones who dropped the dime on Blog the Influencer.

If Bush is Gordon's president then why does Obama have to be mine?

Michael,

If you are an American, you have the same president as Gordon.

If you are not an American, then why are you here?

But Gordon wrote that Bush was NOT HIS president!
Look it up, Joe!
