I couldn't let today -- Sept. 23, 2009 -- pass without wishing my main man, Bruce Springsteen, a happy birthday.
It was 60 years ago that he was "Born In The U.S.A."
May all of us be just a little more like you, Bruce. The world would be a better place.
Let me salute to that with a double shot!

ReplyDeleteYou took the words right out of my mouth there. I never got Bruce Springsteen. I guess he is an OK writer, but the voice is aggravating and the music isn't very catchy. I think most people like him because he comes across as the underdog who beat the odds, which he did -- by not having professional musical talent but trying hard anyway. Sometimes the American dream can turn into a nightmare. Sorry to break your heart here Gordon. I love ya, but I can't go there.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite Springsteen memory is when Ronald Reagan started using BORN IN THE USA as a theme song in his 1980 campaign. Springsteen made him stop!

ReplyDeleteBruce is quite simply the greatest artist of his generation, bar none. Who among the current lineup of computer-enhanced, uh, "singers" today could even approach Springsteen's talent.
ReplyDeleteFor my money, "Thunder Road" is the greatest song ever written by anyone anywhere. "Prove it All Night" is second, followed by the rare, electrified version of "Atlantic City" that he sometimes pulls out in concert.

Maybe with a lot of voice training he could become a singer. I believe "Born in the USA", if sung by another trained singer, would become more acceptable and go down in history like "God Bless America" and Kate Smith.

ReplyDeleteI like the song, that is a protest song, but a great voice(s) was needed when presented... "Let There Be Peace On Earth..." do you recall it? Yes, and it and Kate Smith's version of "God Bless America" will always be number One when we think of America in good times and bad. Happy Birthday Bruce, but your voice is getting too old, give it up!
ReplyDeleteGoing to the big concert in Phila. Gordy? I understand Springsteen is the Closing Act - now I hope that will mean for the whole year. So many concerts that are presented to the public have some Doctors as backers - hearing that is and I can imagine this is one of them.

ReplyDeletePlease give Gordy a ticket to any concert - it really does not make too much a difference as long as it does not have a lot of yelling, instead of singing. Semi-classical would be the best for him, so he could really see what most of us really like.
